May 2010
What a great May we have had!
 Tournament winners on the Manetto!
We again got the pleasure of hosting the Cinco de Mayo tournament. This tournament started several years ago as a way for the Harris boys and their friends and families to get away and fish and relax It has grown and now includes a scholarship fund and donations to local charities.
Cinco de Mayo Participants
Then Thursday, May 20th we had an experience I will never forget. At 9:00 in the morning four guests went out on the Wild Bill. About 11:30 they hooked into a blue marlin. At 1:00 when they should have been coming in we had a call from Captain Caballo. They were still fighting the fish. At 2:00 I was walking with my father (he is 82) down by the dock waiting for the Wild Bill to make its triumphant return. However, they were still in the fight. Beto, the captain of the Sea Phantom asked if we wanted to go out and watch close up.
Dad and I jumped on the boat and away we went. We watched all four guests and the three member crew each take several turns on the rod. About 3:30 we got a radio call that they were giving up. My Dad thought we could land the fish and put out the challenge, “If you are giving up, pass us the rod” Next thing I knew, we pulled up alongside the Wild Bill and the Sea Phantom was in charge of landing the fish. There were only four of us on the boat, Dad, Beto, a mate, and me and we really weren’t prepared to work this great fish.

The Henderson Party who first fought the Big Blue The Elusive Blue Marlin

The Group who had to admit the Big Blue won
We fought for a few hours before the Big Fish was dispatched to bring out provisions. We were out of beer. By this time, we had had visits by other boats wanting to watch the fight. And for another 2 hours, with the Big Fish hovering nearby, we brought the fish within 15 feet of touching the leader. But it wasn’t to be….so at 9:15pm with everyone exhausted, we pushed up the drag. Either we were going to get the leader or break the line. Well…the line broke. Sometimes, the fish wins, but this big blue gave us a lot of fun.

Puffin’s First Grand Slam
To cap things off, on Sunday we had another great day. Rocque on the Puffin scored the first grand slam of the season. He got three sailfish, one blue marlin, one white marlin and a wahoo. However, he wasn’t done. He scored his second grand slam of the season on Thursday May 27th. Again, three sailfish, one white marlin and a blue marlin. Puffin’s Second Grand Slam
